In order for your car to run properly, you need to care for it, and oil changes need to be done regularly. Filter changes are equally as important, so you have to pay close attention to these aspects, and the following guide will tell you everything you need to know about an oil and filter change:
Run Your Engine
You need to do this for a couple of minutes because warm oil drains faster than cold, and you should never get your engine up to full operating temperature; otherwise, the oil will be too hot, and you will be unable to drain it safely.
Drive Your Car Onto Two Ramps
Apply the parking brake when doing this and remove the key and make sure you place chucks behind the wheels for safety. It’s also very important that you wear safety glasses and gloves because the right gear will further allow you to prioritize safety.
Find the Oil Drain Plug
It’s best to consult your owner’s service manual for this step, as this will help you locate the oil drain plug. Make sure you place an oil pan below it because the oil will flow and loosen the plug with a socket wrench. Use your hand to unscrew the plug and push the plug back toward the pan, as this will keep the oil from rushing out until you are ready. Always be careful as the oil may be very hot.
Drain Old Oil
Removing the filler cap on top of your engine will make the draining process faster because air will be able to enter from the top, and after all of the old oil is drained, replace the oil plug and tighten it by hand, after which you must secure it with a wrench. It is very important that you do not over-tighten the drain plug.
Remove the Oil Filter
You need to remove the existing oil filter with an oil filter wrench, clean the engine’s mounting surface with a rag, and check to see that the gasket from the old filter is not stuck to it.
Lubricate Your New Filter
Do this before installing your new filter and coat the rubber seal lightly with fresh oil. The seal must be properly seated in the filter, and you can screw on the filter by hand.
Pour Your New Oil
You have to use a clean funnel, and it is a must that you pour in the amount and type of oil that is specified for your car. Do not forget to replace the cap once you are done.
Run Your Engine
This will allow you to detect any leaks, and you will be able to correct this problem if it exists. If you do not see any leaks, turn off the engine and allow it to rest for a couple of minutes so that the oil has time to drain down.
